Life is a lot like the 1973 film, The Way We Were. You’re either a c-c-curly haired Katie, or a straight-haired Hubble. But whether you’re a Kate, Hubble, or somewhere in-between, the summer can be a stressful time for all hairstyles. Especially with the impending threat that is, summer frizz. And for the Katies of the world, maintaining curly, frizzy hair is a nightmare.

Long sought after and booked by Vogue, Tatler, Harper’s Bazaar, and Elle, Steven Carey has an illustrious career spanning a decade of working on hair shows worldwide. The famed hairdresser – with his own eponymous salon in Mayfair – is today bringing us his top five tips for battling summer frizz:

1. Wash your hair every other day – when hair is dry, it’s more prone to frizz. While some people prefer the frizzier look over the sleek straightness, for those who prefer the latter, washing is an easy hack. Washing every other day enables your hair to retain its natural oils, thereby preventing dryness.

2. Use a wide-toothed comb – simple. Brushes can cause hair to split and on curly hair, the comb’s teeth are practically vicious fangs. Unless you’re trying to straighten hair, Katies should avoid narrow brushes and stick to wide-toothed combs or your fingers to detangle hair.

3. Steer clear from heat – humidity is public enemy number one for curly hair, so it’s no surprise that hot tools can spell trouble too. If your hair tends to frizz as it naturally dries, consider using a diffuser or hair-dryer on a cold setting. It takes longer but will result in beautiful curls with less frizz but plenty of frills. Avoiding heated styling tools can damage your hair too, but if you do need to style, apply a silicone-based serum to it for protection.

4. Carry around dryer sheets – for on-the-go maintenance, putting dryer sheets over your locks to eliminate frizz in a pinch.

5. Hair masks are your guardian angels – Katies, listen out. A hair mask can rejuvenate and repair your hair and promote shine and reduce frizz. Whether you’re whipping up your own hair mask (try ½ avocados, ½ mashed banana, 1 beaten egg, and 2 table spoons of olive oil) or one you buy, leaving it in for 15-30 minutes can do wonders.
