And So To Bed…
As autumn weather starts to close in and there is a slight chill in the air the weekends are less about bouncing out of bed and more about sleeping in or curling up warm as toast under the duvet with a good book (and if you’re lucky breakfast in bed)!
Since we tend to spend more time in bed as the winter months approach, us Belle’s like to make our boudoir as inviting as possible. That means clean crisp sheets with a high thread count. But we also want our room to look fabulous as well so we have searched high and low for the perfect duvet sets out there to bring a little autumnal cheer into the bedroom.
I am a big fan of crisp white sheets like a classic hotel suite. Colours and textures can be added with throws and cushion and it means that the look can be updated seasonally or as the whim takes you.
This Savoy bed linen (left from £20, The White Company) with black piping is a stylish and contemporary addition to any bedroom. But not everyone likes things quite so simple.
COLOURFUL
To add a splash of colour to the ever darkening autumn nights, the Eliana bed linen range (left, from £45, Heal’s) is a reversible duvet cover so that you can change your mind about the look of your linen, without having to change your sheets!
The Cape double duvet cover (centre, £85 from CocoMale) brings in the fall shades of olive green, mustard yellow and taupe and incorporates a cute leaf print – which is very ‘this season’.
Something else that will be prominent for autumn/winter 2010 are the deep rich shades of plum and purple. You don’t only have to wear these colours, you can also wrap them around you as you sleep. The pink ascot damask bed linen from Butterfly by Matthew Williamson (right, from £28.00 – £70.00 from Debenhams) will add some sophistication to your room and make it hard to leave your boudoir.
TRADITIONAL
Sanderson is well known for quality bed linen and this gorgeous Indian bed linen (left, from £12, House of Fraser) is actually based on an ornate 18th century William Morris design originally printed as a wallpaper.
If winter light and colours and just too dark and dreary for you, you will be grateful for the Lighthouse Stripe bedlinen in sky blue (centre, from £68.00 from Runaway Coast). It will evoke memories of the seaside and beach cottages – the perfect antidote for the rainy, grey city.
The Designer’s Guild Watelet duvet cover (right, from £59, John Lewis), is a traditional pattern in a cheery yellow that will brighten both your mood and your room.
MODERN
This funky multi-coloured Union Jack bed linen (left, from £24.00 – £55.00, Debenhams) is the perfect duvet cover for a cool Britannia-style room. It is perfect if you have simple white furniture – all you need is a Banksy print to add to the wall.
Another urban option is this fabulous grey skyline bed linen from BDL by Ben de Lisi (centre, from £40.00 – £60 Debenhams). The grey blends easily into any colour scheme and brings a city style to any bedroom.
This traditional Orla Kiely multi-stem print duvet cover (right, from £50, John Lewis) is the perfect choice for the fashionista who wants the designer look on her bed as well as her back.
If you would like to add a little art work to your bedroom via your bed, this duvet set by legendary graffiti artist Mode2 is just the thing to add a little urban art (WeSC/Mode2). Mode2 is said to be the ‘thinking man’s graffiti artist’ and his commercial endeavours have included being an artist in residence at Coco de Mer. Now he has teamed up with We are the Superlative Conspiracy (WeSC) to allow you to have a piece of contemporary art on your bed.
And this fabulous pink pom pom bedspread from Butterfly by Matthew Williamson (£140, Debenhams) is perfect for adding a quirky splash of colour at the end of any bed.
Now all you have to do is find that book that you just can’t put down and snuggle down deep under the covers to enjoy the cooler autumn nights.
