Trends from New York Fashion Week AW14

New York kicked off the latest Ready-to-Wear Fashion Weeks for Autumn Winter (or Fall) 2014. Some pretty fabulous dress in black, white and red are featured on the runways of Marchesa, Reem Acra, Zac Posen, Vivienne Tam and Victoria Beckham. We also loved the polka dot at Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera’s floaty chiffon, Rodarte’s use of Star Wars prints on their dresses and Theyskens Theory layered look.
There were also some strong trends coming through that you can look to for next autumn/winter, especially if you can pick up some of them in this year’s sales! Here are our top picks:
50 Shades of Grey
The overwhelming colour trend seen on the catwalk in the Big Apple was grey. Sleek and sophisticated it could be seen in cashmere coats, wool skirts, leather, fur and silky dresses. Our favourites were from BCBG Max Azria, DKNY, Donna Karan, Edun, Jason Wu, Kenneth Cole and Ralph Lauren.
Plunging necklines
How low can you go? well that all depends on your bust and your bravery. As these designer showed, winter is not a time to be afraid of showing off your décolletage, as long as you are not too well graced! Sexy examples come from Badgley Mischka, Diane Von Furstenberg, Hugo Boss, Jenny Packham, Narciso Rodriguez, Jason Wu,and Prabal Gurung.
Longline skirts
Hemlines continued their ladylike length which is grown-up and sophisticated without being dowdy. Whats more, in winter, this length goes perfectly with long-lined cosy cashmere coats. Get inspiration from BCBG Max Azria, Kenneth Cole, Victoria Beckham, Michael Kors, Vera Wang and Zac Posen.
Fur, Feathers and Faux
There was certainly a lot of fluff on the runways in the guise of feathers, fur and faux fur. Even the front row was roc king it out in fur with Anna Wintour leading the fashion pack. Jenny Packham, Prabal Gurung, Dennis Basso, Donna Karan, Marchesa, DKNY and Ralph Lauren showed the different ways to incorporate the trends next winter.
Sweaters
This is a fabulously wearable trend that not only looks great but keeps you cosy and warm as well. Oversized ruled the day on the catwalk but as long as it is a touchably soft knit in a muted shade, it will look great. Whether you wear it with loose culottes, a tailored skirt or even on its own, rug up and keep warm next winter. Our favourites were from Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Zimmerman, Oscar de la Renta, Jenny Packham, Helmut Lang and Tory Burch.
Flashes of Red
Red was seen not only as a colour in its own right but as a fabulous accent colour in the New York. Accessorising with bright red shoes, belts and bags were de rigueur but Helmut Lang’s red leather trousers and Oscar de la Renta’s furry red coat were equally enviable. Victoria Beckham, Rag & Bone and Marc Jacobs also highlighted the colour.
Graphics
The graphic print got another outing for the autumnal weather. Mainly in black, white and shades of grey with the odd bit of taupe they demonstrated just how eye-catching and figure fixing these prints can be. The best were Dennis Basso, Donna Karan, Herve Leger by Max Azria, Diane Von Furstenberg, Monica Lhuillier, Sass and Bide and Lacoste.
Tartans
Plaid, tartan, call it what you will but one thing is for sure, you’ll be wearing it by the end of the year if you want to stay ahead of the fashion. Tommy Hilfiger’s whole show was a mash-up of tartan which looked fabulous with the knits and wooly hats. Others that did it well were Lacoste, Rag & Bone, Rebecca Minkoff, Badgley Mischka, Vera Wang and Zimmerman.
