All the glam of Cannes!
The world’s most famous film festival kicked off in style this week as celebrities returned to old-world glamour on the red carpet. The opening of the 63rd Cannes film festival saw stars up the style stakes for the world premiere of Ridley Scott’s new film Robin Hood.
Cate Blanchett, who plays Maid Marion in the big budget flick, chose a black and silver gown by the late Alexander McQueen for the premiere. She accessorised the dress with a silver bag by Roger Vivier.
Salma Hayek sizzled in burgundy Gucci from the first Gucci Première collection by Gucci’s creative director Frida Giannini. While Bollywood beauty Aishwarya Rai chose a stunning floor length Eli Saab dress in pale lilac which she teams with a sparkling Swarovski clutch.
Star of Robin Hood Russell Crowe stepped out with his Aussie wife Danielle Spencer. This is the second movie that Crowe has made with Ridley Scott [the first was epic blockbuster Gladiator] but unfortunately the legendary director was absent from his own premiere as he was recovering from a knee operation.
Desperate Housewives’ Eva Longoria Parker looked every bit the goddess on opening night in a stunning white Emilio Pucci gown which she paired with jewellery by de Grisogono and a clutch by Swarovski. The actress then changed into a sexy gold Elie Saab mini dress for the Robin Hood after party at the Majestic Beach.
The following day Eva again plumped for a floor-lengthed jewel encrusted gown. Although she doesn’t have a film at Cannes, the actress’s rep has said that she will be at the festival for the two week duration and judging by her choices so far it looks like she intends to provide a fashionista feast!
Jewelled colours also seemed to be fashionable this year with plenty of gold and silver as well as rich reds, deep blues and beautiful magenta. And Gucci was definitely the label everyone was wearing as both Salma Hayek and Camilla Belle chose one shouldered sweeping floor length numbers from the label and Aishwarya Rai chose a twisted halterneck gown by Gucci Première to attend the screening of the newly restored version of Luchino Visconti’s Il Gattopardo.
Kate Beckinsale has been gracing the red carpets too as the Brit actress is a juror at this year’s festival. She shone in a Gucci Première silk georgette antique white gown with silver micro bugel beading embellishing the bust and waist detail for the premiere of Wall Street 2. Quirky American film director Tim Burton is the president of the jury that decides which films win which awards. “The choice of Tim Burton to head the next edition of the Festival brings with it a touch of his wonderful fantasy and imagination,” the festival’s Thierry Frémaux said, “which should perfectly suit this event, where as we all know, anything can happen”. The awards are announced on the closing night of the festival, 23rd May.
If this is the start of Cannes, we at Belle can’t wait to see the array of fashion choices yet to come as celebrities try to out glam and out bling each other.
