A Beginner’s Guide To Crystals
Whether you’re a firm believer in their powers, or a hardened cynic, there is no denying crystals are seeing a huge surge in popularity.
Google searches for the term ‘healing crystals’ went up by 60% in the last year in the UK, and celebrity fans from Holly Willoughby and Adele, to Beyonce and Victoria Beckham, have ensured that any hippy, outlandish associations are long gone.
But how do they work, and what is the best stone for a newbie? Crystal healer Laura Konst, of Tali and Loz gives us the lowdown on crystals for beginners.
What actually are crystals?
Crystals are minerals formed in volcanoes or under pressure, that have incredible, uniform molecular structures. As a result they give off energy vibrations of varying levels and strengths.
We have all been witness to good and bad energy in life. When a person with bad energy walks into a room, it can leave you drained and tired. Good energy on the other hand is like the first sip of coffee in the morning – it makes you happy and invigorated.
Healing crystals can have a similar effect. They work by amplifying, storing and absorbing energy, and as they are all tuned to specific frequency vibrations can each offer a different experience.
Are they a new trend?
Not at all. While they are certainly going through a surge of popularity in the western world, crystal healing has been around for thousands of years. The Egyptians used turquoise and emerald for protection and strength, and incorporated them into their jewellery, amulets and cosmetic products. The Ancient Greeks believed amulets from amethyst prevented intoxication and controlled addictive tendencies.
What can crystals help with?
The energy stored within the human body is concentrated on specific energy centres called chakras. When the energy within our bodies is not balanced, it can manifest itself in problems for us, both psychologically and physically. Healing crystals can aid in strengthening, balancing or unblocking the energy centres that are struggling.
Depending on the crystal, some are better suited to combating stress and anxiety, some aid in restful sleep, and others can help with concentration, focus and courage.
For someone new to crystals, where is a good place to start?
If shopping in-store, take the time to pick up the stones, and you may find you are drawn to a particular one. If that is the case you should trust your instincts, as it may be that the vibration is in tune with what you need.
If shopping online, at Tali & Loz we have broken all the crystals down into categories to help people make their choice.
Then you need to consider your price range, as the rarer stones of course go up in price, and sizes can vary from tumble stones – about the size of a coin – right up to cathedrals, which can be bigger than a person!
How can I incorporate crystals into my everyday life?
You can use crystals as home décor, next to your windowsill, on the coffee table, lined up on shelves, or next to your books. Rose quartz on your bedside table is both stunning to look at and will spread loving and energy-clearing vibrations.
Small tumble stones can be kept in your pocket, bag or wallet. For some crystals, it is best to have direct skin contact with the crystal for maximum effect. In this case, crystal jewellery is a great option as it allows the crystals to stay close to your body, and spread their beneficial qualities all day.
There are various ways to incorporate crystals into common everyday objects, from picture frames to gemstone encrusted lamps, plant bags to coasters, and candles to water bottles. You can also use crystals during your meditation, yoga practise or self-care skincare routine, with a jade roller.
