The arrival of the colder winter months often brings with it a whole host of unwanted seasonal ailments. Shorter days and longer nights mean less sunlight and with a depletion of vitamin D. Immune systems can be weakened, making us more susceptible to the common cold, viruses, and other wintry health complaints, all of which are easily spread during this time when we retreat inside.

But here at Belle we are strong believers that we don’t automatically need to rely on chemicals and pharmacy preparations to get us through the cold season – that nature can provide the solutions. Turning to plant power, the natural properties found in a range of essential oils can provide the support our systems need during these tougher times.

In addition to needing support for our health, this time of year often brings in other elements which can add strain on our systems – stress, over-excitement, sleep issues, and overindulgence. Essential oils can have a beneficial impact on our health so Kim Lahiri, Trelonk Wellbeing’s Aromacologist, offered Belle About Town her recommendations for the top 5 Essential Oils to turn to this winter.

Frankincense

A warming and deeply soothing oil, Frankincense is known to support aches within the body. It is also a powerful oil for the skin and respiratory system, making it the perfect support during the cold months. “It’s a useful oil to inhale to help maintain a healthy respiratory tract and prevent winter ills and spills. If you suffer from winter coughs and colds, steam inhalation with a few drops of Frankincense oil soothes and relaxes the throat and airways” says Kim. A core ingredient in Trelonk’s Power Through blends, created to relieve aches and pains and boosted with a secret bio-active plant molecule.

Black Spruce

Black Spruce oil has a crisp, refreshing, coniferous aroma which helps to maintain healthy, open airways, making it easier to breathe deeply. It is a strongly antiseptic oil that also supports and soothes overworked muscles and joints post-exercise. This oil uplifts the mind bringing a feeling of clarity and energy for those dark winter months.

Ravintsara

This oil is perfect for supporting the immune system. Ravintsara is strongly antiseptic and antimicrobial. It deepens rest and relaxation, calms the nervous system, and enhances your mood. Ravintsara encourages deeper breathing and a healthy respiratory tract. Very similar to Eucalyptus, yet gentle enough for children. It is also attributed to helping focus the mind in stressful situations, instilling a sense of positivity.

Bergamot

Bergamot is a bright citrus oil that brings sunshine into those darker winter days and nights. “This oil is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial component, so perfect for winter blends. Proven to uplift and restore the mood, bergamot is a great oil to diffuse around the home as it protects and bolsters the immune system”. Bergamot is an essential ingredient in Trelonk’s Head Strong collection, bringing a sense of balance and ease extra tension and mental activity which causes busy-minds.

Manuka

Manuka oil, originally from New Zealand, has a lovely aroma profile and is known for its powerful antiseptic and antimicrobial foundation. Its soothing, herbaceous scent is powerfully calming and cleansing. “ With Manuka oil’s antiseptic properties, making it a superb skin oil where skin health is compromised due to illness or injury. Manuka bolsters and enhances the immune system and is a balancing, grounding oil for emotions. A must for winter!”

With inhalation being the most efficient and fastest method of delivery of the benefits into the system, use essential oils that can be be diffused or inhaled or simply put a few drops onto a handkerchief and enjoy the scent on the go. Alternatively choose a topical oil which can be applied directly through massage to the skin or in the bath.

  • Emily Cleary

After almost a decade chasing ambulances, and celebrities, for Fleet Street's finest, Emily has taken it down a gear and settled for a (slightly!) slower pace of life in the suburbs. With a love of cheese and fine wine, Emily is more likely to be found chasing her toddlers round Kew Gardens than sipping champagne at a showbiz launch nowadays, or grabbing an hour out of her hectic freelancer's life to chill out in a spa while hubby holds the babies. If only!
