Windsor Illuminated Returns with Myths on the Lake

Windsor illuminated lake display

Magic, mythology, mulled wine and giant marshmallows. The award-winning Windsor Great Park Illuminated is back for the festive season and Belle can testify it is better than ever.

This very special light trail weaving through a section of Windsor Great Park is a beautiful journey through fairy forests and impressive installations. There are several new mythical displays as well as the return of some firm visitor favourites.

Embracing a mythological theme, this year’s trail design features lifelike creatures at the ‘Enchanted Wood’ amongst the trees. The idea extends to the Obelisk Pond with ‘Myths on the Lake’ – a spectacular new projection show over the water.

A festive family treat in Windsor Great Park

The Obelisk Pond is home to a series of 15-metre tall ‘Dancing Fountains’, which wowed our young companions, while elsewhere along the trail displays include a majestic crown befitting the Windsor Great Park location – magical ‘Swirl Pools’ and a ‘Spira-light Forest’ of stylised, glowing Christmas trees – against a familiar Frozen soundtrack.

For those who have visited before, the dreamlike laser scape ‘Laser Symphony’ still lights up the woodland. The ‘Fairy Disco’ returns, as well as a brand-new installation, ‘Sparkle Step’s Cottage’ which, with its mischievous sprite storyline to captivate imaginations.

There are cosy rest spots along the way. We treated ourselves to a cone of loaded chips, an indulgent Christmassy crepe, and a giant marshmallow covered in white chocolate which we toasted on one of the nearby firepits. This year there is also a Bavarian-style bar serving deliciously spicy mulled wine and warming hot chocolate drinks.

Having wrapped up warm we spent an hour and a half walking the route – it could be done quicker but we stopped to take in every illumination at our leisure – and another hour at the funfair and market stalls at the end.

  • Emily Cleary

After almost a decade chasing ambulances, and celebrities, for Fleet Street's finest, Emily has taken it down a gear and settled for a (slightly!) slower pace of life in the suburbs. With a love of cheese and fine wine, Emily is more likely to be found chasing her toddlers round Kew Gardens than sipping champagne at a showbiz launch nowadays, or grabbing an hour out of her hectic freelancer's life to chill out in a spa while hubby holds the babies. If only!
