ULI is a modern pan-Asian local eatery, found just off the Portobello Road, offering an array of traditional and freshly made healthy home-style dishes from Singapore, Malaysia, China and Thailand.

The restaurant has made its home mid-terrace in a building still bearing the original sign “Queen Elizabeth Laundry”.

The outside of the restaurant is beautifully decorated with colourful flowers and plants. We came for dinner one Sunday evening and were sat at a table on the covered terrace, a distinct feature of the restaurant.

Crispy Calamari at ULI

Weather permitting, the roof opens up, but even with the terrace covered, I felt like I was on a beach in California.

The interior was simple, modern and clean, with blues and whites and oak dominating, creating a nautical vibe. It might not seem like an obvious choice of décor for Asian cuisine, but it works.

I started with Crispy Calamari whilst my partner indulged on Crispy Aromatic Duck served with pancakes and all the trimmings. Our table was right by the entrance, giving us just enough opportunity to glimpse at the outside world in-between courses.

Tables kept filling up and delivery orders were very popular too; the people behind ULI clearly must be doing something right.

Summer Nights at ULI Notting Hill

For my main I chose the Pan-fried Teriyaki Black Cod with Asparagus, which was lip-smackingly delicious. My partner had Spicy Stir-fried Beef with Peppers, also delightful. We shared a portion of Egg Fried Rice and Singapore Vermicelli Noodles with Chicken and Tiger Prawns.

We also shared a bottle of Vidaubanaise, Roubertas Cotes de Provence, a divine bottle of French Rosé, simply perfect for the balmy evening.

To finish off our meal my partner took one for the team and thoroughly enjoyed some Yuzu Citrus Junos Cheesecake (damn you dairy intolerance!).

We had a great time in ULI, Graham and all the staff were excellent, welcoming and helpful.

ULI has definitely become one of our favourites and we are so pleased this local gem is on our doorstep. Or just a click of a button away. Either way, we’d happily travel across London for another portion of their Black Cod or Crispy Duck.
