Tramp Celebrates 50 Years of Debauchery

This private member’s club in Piccadilly used to charge members just £7.50 a year for membership, a sum the club still honours today. It is still considered to be one of the most sought after clubs in the capital frequented by rock royalty, high society movers and shakers and A-listers alike.

To gain access into the exclusive echelons, it’s not necessarily what you know, it’s who.

The club’s history is saturated with tales of hedonism and debauchery, with the likes of the Rolling Stones, Keith Moon (who swung from and then subsequently tore a chandelier from the ceiling), Roger Moore and Sir Michael Caine all holding court at the club.

When we visited, one of Tramps’ longest standing employees also whispered that there may even be a tunnel leading directly to Buckingham Palace.

The Terrace at Tramp

The design is Art Nouveau and the Zodiac dining room with hand-carved astrological ceiling is a thing to behold; it also inspired the creation of 12 Zodiac Burgers when Tramp launched in 1969.

It’s glamorous without being ostentatious, with classic British and Italian dishes with a twist on the menu. Of course, service is impeccable and discreet when members need it to be.

The 24 carat gold burger – a twist on the signature patty that’s been on the menu for five decades and loved by Joan Collins – features truffle, foie gras, a secret sauce and a gold leaf coating and was one of the best burgers we’ve ever tucked into; the 50th anniversary blanc de blanc champagne so good (there’s also a rose) we had a fair few glasses.

As for who was there when we visited, our lips are sealed. Because, as the saying goes, ‘what happens in Tramp, stays in Tramp.’

You can now enjoy a taste of this legendary club at home, as the Blanc de Blanc champagne is available to buy via the Tramp website and costs £70; the Rose costs £80 via the website.

The club has also collaborated with mixed media artist Dan Pearce on Who’s Been Tramped?, an exhibition featuring some of the legends in the club’s stories. It will be unveiled in a private view at the club on 3rd September; after a month, the works will be on sale at danpearce-art.com
