September’s Food News With Eat With Ellen

What a summer we’ve had. Full of festivals, fun, sun and food. I’ve seen so many people saying it was one of their best summers ever which makes me feel warm and happy but a bit sad that it’s due to be over. I was hoping to round it off with a visit to the marvellous Meatopia at Tobacco Dock at the weekend, but due to various reasons ended up tidying my garage instead. Anybody else find adulting quite a struggle?

To make up for the grumpiness I have been feeling at having to be sensible for once, I’ve been perusing some stuff for you to do to keep the summer going for as long as possible. From new openings to a final few festivals, there’s plenty to take advantage of before life really does go back to normal. Here’s my food news for September.

Genesis, Shoreditch

New vegan restaurant Genesis launched on Commercial Street in Shoreditch this month. It’s offering a menu of plant-based, GMO-free and organic dishes, apparently with street food influences from around the world. It’s the brainchild of Alex and Oliver Santoro who, despite being from a family that’s been involved in the meat industry for over 100 years, both turned vegan seven years ago. Their plan is to offer food that appeals to vegans and meat-eaters alike, as well as supporting organic farming practices.

The menu will include sharing plates, salads, soups, tacos, burgers and hot dogs, including dishes inspired travels through India, South East Asia and the Middle East. Drinks will include freshly-made organic cold-pressed juices, milkshakes, Lo Bros Kombucha, organic drinks from Longflint Drinks Co, house cocktails, organic beers and wines, and cold brew coffees from Dutch Lab.

Wild Pizza pop-up at Tate Modern

We’ve had promises of an Indian summer and if it comes, you could do worse than pop over to Tate Modern’s riverside Summer Terrace to enjoy beer-matched foraged pizza from the new Wild Pizza pop-up. Tate Executive Chef Chris Dines has come up with a pizza menu to feature alongside Wild Beer Co’s range of craft beer. The menu includes the Nebula which features fresh torpedino tomatoes, fior di latta and basil, and the Bibble combining Girolles, thyme and Fior Di Latte. They’re all designed to complement the ten taps of Wild Beer Co’s craft beer on offer on the summer terrace, including Shika, their new dry hopped lager and Breakfast Of Champignons 2018, an ode the chanterelle mushroom.

Tom Kerridge at The Corinthia

This month’s must-know food news is that Tom Kerridge is opening his first London restaurant at The Corinthia Hotel. British classics are big on the agenda, with dishes like fish and chips with pease pudding, tartare and matson spiced sauce on the menu and daily specials from a rotisserie. Apparently it’ll be a relaxed British brasserie-style dining room serving, in Kerridge’s words, “quality British cooking that is modern and exciting”.
