Review – Afternoon Tea, The Curtain Hotel, Shoreditch

Ah, the quintessential English afternoon tea. I’m not sure whether it’s something to do with getting older, but the thought of whiling away a couple of hours in a classy hotel, with an array of delectable edible morsels and a glass of champagne or three is enough to make me feel giddy with joy. So, we were very pleased to be invited to try the new afternoon tea in The Green Room at The Curtain hotel in Shoreditch.

The afternoon tea has the usual finger sandwiches, plus devilled eggs, smoked salmon bagels and a gin and tonic cucumber sandwich. The standouts were the scones, which were warm, fresh out of the oven. There was also a delightful scattering of other tiny cakes and macarons, all delicious.

Afternoon Tea at The Curtain

It’s washed down with a great selection of tea, as The Curtain has partnered with local social enterprise Hackney Herbal to curate a bespoke blend of teas and infusions. If you haven’t heard of Hackney Herbal before, they’re worth checking out as they run a programme of walks and masterclasses designed to help you understand more about herbs and their amazing benefits, including making your own natural products.

If you can’t make it to afternoon tea, we’d highly recommend popping into The Curtain for a drink, dinner, massage (they have a spa which sounds lush) or just a nose round as it’s a seriously cool venue. It’s quite industrial in feel, softened with lovely touches like velvet seats in peacock shades and lots of plants. The perfect spot for feeling like a cool East London kid – even if just for a day.

  • Afternoon Tea in The Green Room, The Curtain Hotel is available Friday – Sunday at £30 per head, or £40 with a glass of champagne.
