Mixology Magic at Pondicherry Paddington

The regeneration of Paddington into a social epicentre has seen the formerly dusty end of west London transformed into a hip new hub bursting with bars and cafes lining the canal and stretching to the Royal parks.

But while many destinations are found more centrally, surrounding the bustling station, wander just a few minutes towards the elegant gardens of Norfolk Square and you’ll stumble across a demure yet decadent cocktail bar serving creations that sit head and shoulders above any other on the Paddington scene.

Pondicherry cocktail bar is perfection on a plate. Taking its name from an Indian region with a famous French Quarter, the room oozes exotic Eastern class. The décor is a hat-tip to Indian design, and each delightful drink has a touch of spice to make it truly unique.

Matteo is head barman and creator of the mixology menu, and his enthusiasm for the origins of each drink is contagious as he explains the unique flavour combinations.

The eponymous Pondicherry signature cocktail is possibly the most moreish rum-based long drink you’ll ever taste. For those with a penchant for pisco the muscat wine base sits perfectly with rum, coconut milk, mango syrup and lime juice. Forget your Pina Coladas, the Pondicherry raises the bar on coconut-based cocktails. And for those with a taste for sours, the Bellanger Piquant is a fresh and vibrant Margarita alternative. A tumbler filled with tequila and smoky mezcal mixed with ginger liqueur agave nectar and lime, the fire tincture sets of the spice that gives this drink a kick.

We also tried the delicious – alcoholic – Masala Spiced Iced Tea, as well as a delightful selection of non-alcoholic mocktails that all pack a punch with none of the inconvenient after effects!

Holding just 30 or so people, Pondicherry is a the perfect place for an intimate evening with a small group of friends, or a pre-meal date night destination for those looking for quality over convenience. Service is outstanding – Matteo offers explanations on everything but respects each groups’ space – and prices are very reasonable for the area, at around £14 per cocktail. What stands out at Pondicherry cocktail bar is the prioritising of customer satisfaction over profit. Take your time, inhale the aromas and enjoy the flavours, this laid-back bar is a safe haven for those seeking out quality over the conveyor-belt traction of the nearby station’s bigger and busier bars.
