Pizza & Tequila Cocktails On Sloane Square

What do George Clooney, Sloane Square and pizza have in common? The newest exciting alfresco dining terrace pop-up, Pizza On The Square, brought to you by Sloane Square’s The Botanist and Casamigos Tequila and Mezcal.

London is finally getting its inimitable buzz back after the easing of  lockdown restrictions and it’s music to our ears. With summer just round a corner, who doesn’t fancy an easy-going date with authentic, wood-fired pizza and award-winning, ultra-premium tequila and mezcal cocktails in the iconic hotspot that is Sloane Square?

I knew George Clooney was unlikely to show up but the ultra-fine Casamigos Tequila and Mezcal he co-founded in 2013 were definitely headed to my table, so I secured myself a plus one to help me with the pizza and cocktail feast.

We scored a great seating spot on a comfy rattan sofa near the Casamigos solid Oak bar, sipped our first round of Casamigos cocktails and got to people watching. Pizza on The Square accommodates up to 85 people in its open space and despite being busy and with people milling about at busier times, the tables didn’t feel too close to each other. We could immerse ourselves into a private conversation but also felt part of the nicely relaxed, open-space buzz.

Did I mention I’m neither a pizza or a tequila fan? But I’m a fan of a challenge, curiosity and having an open mind. I’m also now a big fan of ‘Can I please escape the house in the evening and leave my toddler in the capable hands of my husband?’

Whilst we waited for our pizzas, we nibbled on smoked almonds, tarallini (spicy Italian crackers) and marinated olives and compared our notes on the first round of Casamigos cocktails.

The word ‘mezcal’ rather than ‘tequila’ caught my eye on the cocktail menu because I liked the sound of mezcal being cooked inside earthen pits that are lined with lava rocks and filled with wood and charcoal before being distilled in clay pots. (Thank you, Wikipedia) All it needs is a dragon supervising the process, at least in my head.

The Casamigos bar mixologists presented me with The Mexicano, created with Casamigos Joven Mezcal, strawberry Campari, Belsazar Rosé and Fever Tree blood orange soda. I was warned Mezcal is smoky and indeed it is but mixed with all that jazz, it was pleasant and potent. My friend had the popular Cantarito Amigos made of Casamigos Reposado Tequila, grapefruit juice, agave nectar, fresh lime and pink grapefruit soda. It’s a little on the sweet side (for me) and easy to drink plenty of.

Our Prosciutto and Gamberetti pizzas arrived and we tucked right in. A good-sized portion of prosciutto, rocket pesto, pine nuts and buffalo mozzarella pizza for me and for my adventurous pizza-lover friend, the Gamberetti, with atlantic prawns, garlic, buffalo mozzarella, tomato and olive oil. Hungry we were no longer.

Back to more Casamigos Tequila and Mezcal cocktails, we went for another round of these small batch, ultra-premium tequilas, made from the finest hand-selected 100% Blue Weber agaves grown in the rich red clay soil and cool climate of Mexico’s Jalisco Highlands for a minimum of seven years. Jalisco Claro and Tommy’s Casa Caliente (with a green chilli for extra punch) went down a treat too. I may well return soon and try the Frozen Watermelon and Coconut Margarita too.

If you’re not one for pizza or tequila but you still want to soak up the fantastic atmosphere of Pizza On The Square, the menu offers lighter food options like Butternut Squash or Caesar Salads, as well as vegan and vegetarian pizza options there’s also a white pizza if you’re not into tomato sauce.

Skipping Tequila, there is a range of premium wines on offer, specially selected by The Botanist’s chef Sommelier, draught beer from Birra Moretti and  a range of non-alcoholic cocktails or full soft drinks menu. Ideal for a refreshing summer pit stop.
