Oslo: Nordic Dining in The Heart Of Hackney

OSLO in Hackney

With the hygge hangover still beating strong in London’s heart, Scandinavian influences have never been more popular, so Belle decided to check out Oslo – a bar and restaurant located in a converted railway station in Hackney. As soon as you walk into the restaurant, you’re immersed in the Nordic themed décor of material covered hanging lights, bare brick archways and quirky art displays.

The food at Oslo is an exciting and flavourful mix. Featuring all of your staples like beef burgers (juicy, packed with seasoning and topped with Swiss cheese, pickled cabbage and bacon) through to mac and cheese which is sprinkled with the most delicious sourdough croutons you can possibly imagine.  Oslo also hosts Nordic inspired dishes like Polse (chargrilled Norwegian sausage on  Nordic potato tortas with pickled cabbage and radishes),  cod bolinhos (cod croquettes with a twist, served with seaweed tempura & lime mayo) and tempered avocado. All of which, we’re pleased to confirm, taste incredible and are well worth experiencing!

Oslo Hackney offers Norwegian drinking and dining in a stylish and laid back environment

The food has modern and ‘gram worthy presentation and the portions are really generous, meaning that you can absolutely tuck in for a full-on feast!

The drinks menu is really vast with a nice range of reasonably priced cocktails and extensive spirit lists, meaning gin / whiskey buffs will be spoiled for choice. It’s clear from the constant congregations at the bar that popping in a swift one after work is a popular choice for locals, which we always think is a good sign that you’re on to a keeper.

Our only niggle was that the bar ran out of crushed ice meaning our cocktail-loving-selves had to go without until halfway through our meals and our replacement wines didn’t join us until mid-starter due to apparent under-staffing levels. That being said, the staff we did see were lovely and as soon as the ice arrived in the building, so did the cocktails at our table!

Oslo is known for its seasonal menus and its new Summer menu is now on offer, featuring a range of dishes such as Nordic Poke and Poussin – a whole roasted baby chicken with a balsamic glaze.
