Brighton Fringe: Revel Puck Circus

Brighton is bursting with energy all year round, but even more so once the sunshine arrives. May is upon us and we have been gifted with several sunny (even record-breaking) days. May also brings with it a rich roster of exciting events for Brightonians and visitors to enjoy – the Brighton Fringe, the Brighton Festival, Artist Open House, various street parties and community events.

Brighton Fringe celebrates 20 years this year and runs until 1st June. It brings entertainment to suit all tastes and ages, from comedy to circus, to theatre… spanning across 150 venues around the city.

We went along to the “Nose Dive Assembly” run by the contemporary circus company Revel Puck Circus, housed at The Circus Yard venue.

The story follows the journey of Arielle, the ring-mistress, whose dream is to spread her wings and fly… inspired by the performers in the show. And boy did she try! Much to the entertainment of the younger spectators, Arielle’s journey is silly and clumsy, and deserving of the hysterical bouts of laughter generated by the children in the audience.

The performance was extremely well choreographed and had us on the edge of our seats throughout…high-rope acrobatics, jaw-dropping aerial skills and trapeze, teeterboarders, cyr wheels….all impressive and entertaining. The only UK female “Wheel of Death” duo performance was the grand finale and well worth waiting for, it had my heart racing with excitement.

After the show my friend and I were quick to search for adult gymnastic and circus classes locally, having been left inspired by the acts, their talents and their agility. I doubt I’d ever be able to achieve such skills, but one can only dream… just like Arielle.

The Nose Dive Assembly provides entertainment for all the family, with its humour and impressive performances…showing not only what the human body is capable of, but also highlighting the power of teamwork, friendship and trust.

It’s highly recommended.
