Augmented Reality at The Alchemist

Augmented reality cocktails at The Alchemist on St Martin's Lane.

The Alchemist on St Martin’s Lane has just launched a new addition to their inventive, already mad-cap, cocktail menu : Augmented Reality cocktails. I’ve been a long time fan of the mixology at the Alchemist and was excited to find out what they could conjure up to complement cocktails like The Ballbreaker, Smokey Old Fashioned and Tickle Me Pink.

The new menu contains six brand new cocktails, still with the bubbling, smoking and exciting flair for which The Alchemist is known. The twist this time, however, is that by downloading an app called The Conjurer and then pointing your phone at a customised drinks coaster, you get an augmented reality experience on the screen linked to the cocktail itself.

The Adam’s Apple, for example, features an animated Adam and Eve surrounding the apple tree. After a while, the forbidden fruit appears to drop into your drink. The staff were excellent, and told the childhood inspirations behind each cocktail for another extra-sensory experience. We loved the High Tea in the Clouds, containing Hendricks, Earl Grey Infusion, Lemon and topped with a bubbling Champagne Foam Milk, served in a porcelain teacup.

It’s a bit like an alcoholic version of Pokemon Go!, and you get to collect elixirs on the app. When you’ve collected all six, you unlock a secret cocktail which doesn’t appear on the menu. I can assure you it was well worth the wait! Expect to see the videos of the AR all over Instagram any time soon.
