UK Women Happiest – And Having Better Sex – In Their Forties!

British women are happiest, healthiest and most body confident in their forties, according to new research.

Which is news to me as I count down the final two weeks before my 40th birthday. The past few months have been filled with thoughts of it’s all downhill from here and  if I don’t get back my figure now I’ll be a blimp forever. But maybe my apprehension was misplaced…

A nationwide survey of British women in their forties and fifties has revealed 44 to be the perfect age for a woman, with 70% saying they feel happier and healthier than ever before.

Famous faces who turn 44 this year include Kate Moss, Eva Mendes, Penelope Cruz, Amy Adams, Emilia Fox and Victoria Beckham. Make up your own mind as to who you think seems to be embracing their age and who, ahem, may be relying a little heavier each year on surgical support…

And according to the findings, half of British women claim they are having better sex in their forties than they did in their twenties and thirties – with 41% saying they do not have the same hang ups or insecurities as they did in their youth.

Overall, 85% said they started to feel different about their health and well-being in their forties, with two thirds saying they feel more confident and body positive than they did when they were younger. Could it be an awareness of our own mortality that gives us the impetus to change our diet and lifestyle so we actually look after ourselves more as we enter into this stage of life, rather than living like the good times will never end?!

In fact, nearly half (44%) of the 2,000 women polled by Ryvita said they have never looked better, with two in three (67%) saying they feel more comfortable in their own skin, 62% saying they care less about comparing themselves to others and 56% saying they are simply less critical of themselves than they were when they were younger.

Everyone’s favourite fitness freak – Davina McCall – has teamed up with RYVITA and Cancer Research UK on their Walk All Over cancer campaign told Belle About Town: “In my forties I focused on getting more good into my life by adopting a healthy attitude towards food and keeping fit with regular exercise.

“I totally get that spending hours in the gym isn’t for everyone, so if you are looking to get active, there are some really fun ways you can do this. Getting outside is amazing. Going for a brisk walk or jog is a brill stepping stone and Cancer Research UK has a number events such as Walk All Over Cancer, Race for Life and Shine Night Walk, where you can get your body moving for a great cause. A great way to feel good on the inside as well as out.”

When it comes to growing old gracefully, 62% said they were more than happy to embrace the ageing process, while a further 23% said they were actually looking forward to going grey.

  • RYVITA, Davina and Cancer Research UK are uniting together to encourage women to get more good into their life by partnering together with three campaigns aimed at getting people more active – Walk All Over Cancer, Race for Life and Shine Night Walk.
