Cannabidiol is often used as a natural remedy used for common ailments including anxiety, and as a pain reliever. Better known as CBD, Cannabidiol is one of more than 100 chemical compounds called cannabinoids that are found in the cannabis plant, Cannabis sativa.

No longer controversial, CBD continues to gain momentum and popularity in the health and wellness worlds, so Belle About Town spoke to Jonathan Millbank of Eresos CBD & Wellness to find out what other benefits we might reap by introducing a small amount of CBD into our days.

HEAT & SLEEP

“Trying to get to sleep at any time of year can be difficult but add in the warmer evenings in summer and the challenge of quick but restful sleep is escalated,” says Jonathan.  “Studies on the use of CBD for sleep, insomnia, anxiety and stress have been conducted, with promising results indicating that participants found it easier to fall asleep.  Warm evenings are not directly comparable to study conditions, however they can be disruptive, consequently triggering stress and difficulty relaxing.  Whilst further research is required, it is known that CBD can increase a feeling of relaxation and calm which could help with insomnia, anxiety and other sleep related issues. “

FLYING & TRAVEL

“While we all like to get away on vacation, all forms of travel, especially flying, can sometimes cause anxiety and stress. Current research shows us that CBD binds with the receptors found on the surface of cells found within the central and peripheral nervous system, acting as a neurotransmitter regulating fear and anxiety-induced behaviours. So taking CBD before you leave for your journey may lower these feelings and help instill a feeling of ease”

SUMMER BBQs & IBS

“People who suffer with IBS may find flare-ups increase during the summer when eating out, or having picnics or BBQs. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is part of the body’s complex mechanisms that regulates the immune and nervous system by binding with the CB1 and CB2 receptors, found on the surface of cells within the central and peripheral nervous system, and the immune system respectively, this is a study that highlights how CBD is able bind with the CB1 receptors for IBS sufferers regulating pain signals. Another study found that CBD’s anti-inflammatory regulation when binding with the CB2 receptors that express on the surface of immune cells, can help prevent intestinal damage caused by IBS (overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines), providing symptomatic relief.  It is however advisable to  consult with a doctor before taking CBD to help with IBS symptoms.  IBS sufferers are recommended by the NHS to eat fresh/homemade food, keep a diary of what you eat and any symptoms you detect that trigger symptoms, try to relax and de-stress your mind, exercise and try probiotics.”

SUMMER SPORTS

“Summer activities like swimming, tennis, running, cycling and more, can help us feel more motivated but this can also take a toll on our muscles and increase body pain from post-exercise or injury.  There are many remedies people seek for sore muscles including rest, stretching, massage, anti-inflammatory medications, heat therapy and cold compression or immersion. An alternative remedy receiving increased interest is the use of CBD. Studies have found that CBD stimulates the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines, and moderating the over production of pro-inflammatory cytokines thus regulating and moderating the inflammatory process associated with soft tissues injury caused by exercise”

SKIN BREAKOUTS & WARM WEATHER

“Summertime can cause an increase of clogged pores and breakouts on the skin due to the higher humidity inducing sweat which can sometimes result in an excess of oil specific to the skin’s sebum levels. CBD contains many skincare benefits including anti-inflammatory properties which may help improve skin conditions such as acne and acne scars, itchiness, psoriasis and eczema, as well as treating dry skin and damage from free radicals.”
