Film: Welcome To Curiosity
Supporter of budget British movies and multiple interlinked storylines? We’d straightaway say that this is one for you.
We were invited along to the red carpet premier of the world’s first entirely crowdfunded movie – a gritty, crime thriller, featuring Richard Blackwood (EastEnders), Jack Ashton (Call The Midwife) Cristian Solimeno (Rush) and Amrita Acharia (The Good Karma Hospital) and have the lowdown for you below!
What’s it about?
To sum up, this thriller is set in the town of Curiosity and sees four storylines which, at first, have no bearing on one another whatsoever but what is clear is that the town is not the safest…
Storylines include a heist gone wrong, a curious (pardon the pun) child doing his own investigative work on a suspicious gardener, a mysterious, unnamed female attempting to find her way to an unknown location and an everyday working man who gets caught up in a series of events with a cheeky stranger.
What works?
There are definitely some twists and turns along the way which we weren’t expecting and surprisingly, this movie gave us lots of laughs (for the right reasons!) especially from Solimeno who plays the smouldering lead who get caught up in what’s arguably the main plotline.
The look and feel of the film definitely has some Tarantino moments but they are interspersed cleverly between scenes so you don’t feel as though you’re watching a copycat.
What doesn’t work?
As well as some funny scenes with good camera angles and direction, there are also several cringeworthy action scenes that very clearly reveal the film’s tight budget (£200k and a 50 day work window) and therefore its parameters.
What the Director says
Director Ben Pickering is arguably one of the most transparent and communicative directors we’ve come across. When introducing the movie, he announced how he was shocked to see Welcome To Curiosity actually come into fruition and hit the big screen. Reason being? A three year prison stint apparently!
Pickering describes the move as a mix between Banshee, In Bruges and Tales of the Unexpected. We’re not so sure it’s up to that level, but is worth a watch if you’re bored of Love Island and keen on supporting homegrown arts.
