Teething Alternatives to Traditional Gels

Soothing a teething baby is a test every parent has to undergo, but recent changes to rules around teething gels means they are now harder to buy.

Not surprisingly, many parents are now on the hunt for alternatives to help soothe their babies.  Check out these top solutions that are making waves in the baby teething market.

Eco Teether: As we all make steps towards going plastic free, many parents are looking for products made from natural or renewable sources. Top tip- This is a great teething toy to take out and about as the cloth can be used as a makeshift bib, or used to clean up dribbles and spills.

The Must-Have Teether: Stand aside Sophie The Giraffe, there is a new middle-class baby talisman in town. The Original Teething Toy, £9.99, by Matchstick Money is taking the baby world by storm and it’s easy to see why! It is made from hygienic, FDA-approved silicone, which means it’s flexible to allow babies to easily hold and shove it into the their mouth! The fun monkey design is available in lots of fun colours – one to match with every outfit!  What’s more, it makes an excellent pre-training toothbrush to encourage early brushing. Best of all, it is super easy to clean. Simply place it in either the dishwasher or steriliser and you’re good to go!

Natural Medication: New rule changes mean that parents with teething babies and toddlers can only buy traditional teething gels over the counter at the pharmacy from now on. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) says pharmacists are best placed to offer guidance and support on teething. Parents are now looking for homeopathic alternatives to ease  teething pain, and tender gums. Nelsons Teetha Teething Granules, £4.55, is a homeopathic product to treat teething pain, sore and tender gums, flushed cheeks and dribbling. It is aimed at babies over the age of 3 months.

Top tip- These granules come in handy sachets, which means they are easy to store and use on the go. Buy from pharmacies.

Coping With Side Effects: One of the side effects of teething is that it may cause a runny nose. Bacteria thrives in mucus and some babies can develop secondary infections in the chest or ear.  That is why it is so important to remove mucus, especially as little ones are more vulnerable to infection. Try NibNabs, a simple yet effective new product designed to gently and safely remove musuc from babies’ noses. Designed by mum of two Debbie Banks, NibNabs is the only nose tweezers to gain paediatrician approval.  Available from Amazon at £6.99.
