How to create the perfect sleep sanctuary

Having a healthy immune system is paramount, particularly now that a pandemic has been declared over Corona virus and getting a goodnight sleep is crucial to that. “Sleep, nutrition and exercise are known as the three pillars of health, and in order to maintain optimum physical and mental wellness, we need all three [of the] pillars to be fortified,” Dr David Burton explained on World Sleep Day on March 13. “If we lack adequate NREM and REM, our physical, mental and emotional health is compromised, including our immune system.”

We spend a third of our lives in bed, so making sure you have a comfortable and cosy sleep sanctuary that encourages a restful sleep really can change your life. The experts over at Bedfolk, who specialise in ultra-comfortable bedding, have given Belle About Town their seven most important tips for creating the perfect sleep sanctuary to ensure you get a good night’s slumber.

1.       Dim the Lights

It’s no secret that harsh, bright lighting can make us feel more awake whilst also triggering headaches and eye pain. When you’re settling into your bedtime routine, whether that’s reading a book, watching a film, or listening to a podcast, ensure you have a night lamp which you can turn on to create a gentle, soothing light. You can also use candlelight if you want to feel extra relaxed and sleepy.

2.       Get Tidy

Studies by The National Sleep Foundation have shown that a tidy bedroom means better sleep. Clearing away your day to day clutter can really help to create a sleep sanctuary (with people who make their beds being 19% more likely to sleep well that people who don’t!)

3.       Ban Electronics

Laptops, tablets and smartphones emit ‘blue light’, which can stop the production of melatonin (the hormone that makes us feel sleepy). To help you feel relaxed and able to sink into a deeper sleep, keep your electronics away from arms reach so you aren’t tempted to have a scroll.

4.       White Noise

Those who live in a noisy city may be disturbed by sounds such as cars passing by, people in the street and sirens. Creating white noise can help to drown out these sounds and promote a more restful sleep. Many people use household items such as a fan or a de-humidifier to act as constant noise, which can also be quite comforting.

5.       Create a Scent

Scents such as Lavender and Chamomile can work wonders in sending you off into a deep sleep. You can get these within oils, pillow sprays or candles and they are a great way to help your body and mind relax, especially at times of stress.

6.       Invest in Quality Bedding

The most important thing when it comes to creating a comfortable place to sleep is ensuring you have quality bedding. Pure, natural and super-soft bedding can really enhance your sleep experience. 7.       Create a Routine
