Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Posted by Editor On December - 16 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Sherlock Holmes A Game Of ShadowsThe new Holmes starts with a bang and doesn’t let up. It’s filled with fights, shoot-outs and high-speed chases – well as high-speed as it got in Queen Victoria’s day.

All the while Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jnr) and Dr Watson (Jude Law) carry on the deliciously bitchy but matey sparring they did so well in the first film.

Prepare to be taken back to your childhood in Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber’s latest West End offering. After discovering Danielle Hope on BBC1’s Over The Rainbow, he’s invested a lot of time and imagination in the magical Wizard of Oz. Danielle skips through the production as Dorothy and while she doesn’t belt out the song she’s known for, Over The Rainbow, she hits all the right notes and maintains her American accent throughout.

Catch Madam Butterfly Before She Flies Away

For a first venture into the world of opera – apart from a picnic in Hyde Park watching the amazing Pavarotti with my parents about decade ago – Madam Butterfly was the perfect choice. Sung in English, you’d think I’d be able understand and follow the plot. You’d be wrong. Such is the speed and decibel most of the opera is sung in, for the most part I couldn’t understand a word of it. But, that doesn’t detract in the slightest. Seriously.

Conviction

If you liked Erin Brockovich you’ll love Conviction – the true story of a trailer trash single mum who takes on the law to try to prove her brother innocent of a brutal murder.

Betty Anne Waters (Hilary Swank) was an unemployed high school drop-out. Her brother Kenny (Sam Rockwell) was a petty crook and bar room brawler.

Cirque du Soleil TOTEM

It’s grey, it’s miserable, it’s January. What we need is a bit of gleam and shine, and Cirque du Soleil’s TOTEM provides just that as the perfect beat the blues, New Year show.

With Robert Lepage, one of the world’s most creative theatre-makers, as writer and director, along with jaw-dropping acrobatics and exhilarating aerial stunts this show is inspiring.

Brad Pitt turns superhero

In the realm of digital animation it is Pixar who have arguably been the Kings – setting the standard, raising the bar and taking the spoils – so much so that Disney Studios felt compelled to buy them. Dreamworks, the other big hitter in this sector, have had their notable successes too (Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, How To Train Your Dragon) without ever firmly gripping the crown. Until now.

Eat Pray Love

While Eat Pray Love has had mixed reviews from the critics I think it all depends on what you are looking for in the movie to what you will get out of it. This is without a doubt a feast for the eyes. Whether it is the beautiful scenery or the beautiful men that you choose to gaze upon. The main problem I think many people have with this movie is that they are looking for too much in it, they are looking for the answer to happiness, or enlightenment – too much for any film to bear!

The Back-Up Plan

Posted by Editor On May - 1 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

This movie touches on a very modern dilemma. While finding Mr or Mrs Right seems to take a whole lot longer these days, it seems that women’s biological clocks have not caught up with this phenomenon leading some women to consider the back-up plan of going it alone.
