In London, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to musicals and theatre shows. We all have our favourites and can sing most of the songs word for word – The Lion King, Mama Mia!, Mary Poppins and Les Misérables to name just a few. What if I told you that you could relive all of these in one enchanted evening?
I recently spent one fine London night on an open-top Routemaster bus being paraded through West End’s famous Theatreland, feeling rather like a star myself. We were treated to a special performance by The WestEnders, a group of six talented vocalists, who entertained us (and the street crowds thanks to the traffic) with a selection of songs from some of the best and most popular musicals and theatre shows.
The evening started off at the magnificent Savoy hotel with a collection of mouth-watering cocktails and a sneak-peak performance from The WestEnders. We were then whisked away into the magical land of theatres on the old Routemaster, where The WestEnders sang us through some of the biggest musical hits. I quickly mastered the art of clapping and cheering, whilst trying to balance a cocktail and selection of wonderful canapés from the Savoy. It was an acrobatic task whilst also maintaining my somewhat glamorous ‘wind-swept’ look. Oh what a night!
The WestEnders, between them, have performed in over twenty-five West End shows and musicals, and it was at the Palace Theatre where the idea for the group was born. They toured some of the most famous theatres in London and the UK, and Europe, as well as cruising around U.S, Brazil and Australia, India and…the Amazon!
I left the tour with a spring in my step, humming to ‘The Circle of Life’ and one of my favourites – ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’. It was a perfect evening that brought back many happy memories, leaving me feeling slightly nostalgic and wanting more of what I just experienced. By all accounts, they most certainly will rock you.
