Five Perfect Proposal Tips

Plucking up the courage to pop the question? There’s no denying that the location, date and timing of your looming proposal are pivotal. Be it elaborate, low-key or magically unique, if you’re looking to fast track your way to happily ever after then we have just the ticket.

Belle About Town consulted Beatriz Lobeto, events manager at Hertfordshire’s top wedding venue, Sopwell House, who gave us his five top tips to ensure your day goes off without a hitch.

Dinner Date

A dinner date is already a very intimate, romantic occasion so it’s the perfect time of day to pop the question. Why not ask the restaurant staff to swap cutlery for a thoughtful teaspoon which does the hard work for you? A simple message of ‘will you marry me’ engraved onto the spoon served with dessert could well do the trick. Warn waiting staff in advance so they can be as discreet or elaborate with the dish as you wish!

Go Alfresco

For an alfresco proposal, pick a picturesque spot and lay out a picnic hamper with all the trimmings. Manicured hotel lawns are the perfect location for a picnic proposal, or how about a romantic stroll through one of London’s beautiful royal parks before you pop the question?

Safekeeping

Ensure your ring box is safely stowed away, ideally in a pocket fastened with zips or buttons! There’s no mishap more likely to mess up your pending proposal than a missing ring!

Keep it Private

For those who’d prefer a private proposal, why not whisk your other half away for a memorable long weekend spent in a home-away-from-home? Our Mews Suites at Sopwell House offer country home features – such as plush white linen bedding, real timber wood flooring, farmhouse doors, pristine Wellington boot stands, exquisite wall coverings and cosy window seats. After the big moment you’ll be able to jump into your own hot tub before pouring some bubbles from the bottle.

Planning Makes Perfect

Although you might be most worried about the proposal, it’s important to plan the remainder of the day too. You only get one chance to enjoy your first day with your new fiancé(e!), so why not go for an indulgent afternoon tea or book a spa treatment. Many top hotels offer couples packages, and cater for proposals specifically, ensuring everything is just right at the all-important moment!

Emily Cleary

After almost a decade chasing ambulances, and celebrities, for Fleet Street’s finest, Emily has taken it down a gear and settled for a (slightly!) slower pace of life in the suburbs. With a love of cheese and fine wine, Emily is more likely to be found chasing her toddlers round Kew Gardens than sipping champagne at a showbiz launch nowadays, or grabbing an hour out of her hectic freelancer’s life to chill out in a spa while hubby holds the babies. If only!
