Album Review: Hard To Find

[Saint Etienne]

For some reason buying a compilation album doesn’t seem very ‘adult’.

The words bring to mind those brightly coloured Now 79 (*insert number here*) albums you got as a kid at Christmas, teeny R&B discs or those naff woman-themed collections they sell in Asda every Mother’s Day.
However, Hard To Find is the compilation album’s saviour, single-handedly taking its faded image and polishing it up into something shiny and lovely.

Full of rare mixes and 12 inches of mostly ’90s classics from lots of cool and (not so) cool artists, this double album is perfect for blasting from your car, getting ready to go out to – or if you must, playing in the background at a dinner party.

It includes a seven-minute version of The Beloved’s Sun Rising, an elongated and very funky Buffalo Stance by Neneh Cherry (oh so good when you haven’t heard it for a while) and a gorgeous full-length Only Love Can Break Your Heart by Saint Etienne, along with guilty pleasures such as Hall & Oates’ I Can’t Go For That and Simply Red’s Money’s Too Tight To Mention.

Roll on Hard To Find 2. And 3. And 4…
