Do Your Bit For Breast Cancer

Posted by Editor On September - 30 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Breast cancer seems to be prevalent in our society. Everyday you hear of another star who is battling the disease with celebrities such as Jennifer Saunders, Kylie Minogue, Sheryl Crowe, Christina Applegate and Olivia Newton John all having beaten breast cancer. But it can also effect those nearest and dearest to us. Personally a former flatmate of mine was diagnosed with the disease while I lived with her, my aunt finished chemotherapy for breast cancer earlier in the year and one of my dearest friends was also diagnosed with it late last year.

It’s been almost three years since the last ‘Shopaholic’ novel hit the bookstores and Becky Brandon (nee Bloomwood) was unleashed upon a series of high streets and the designer stores that line them. The latest offering from prolific writer Sophie Kinsella follows Becky – now mum to a toddler daughter who is the mini shopaholic of the book’s title – as she becomes embroiled in a series of typical mishaps and misfortunes, which are only partly due to her renown shopping addiction.

Long gone are the days when lipstick and eyeliner were reserved for women, as new findings shows us that metrosexual men, with their manscara and guyliner, are here to stay. Around 3.3 million men in the UK admitting to wearing make-up or other cosmetic products, according to a  new survey from Opinium Research.

Eat Pray Love

While Eat Pray Love has had mixed reviews from the critics I think it all depends on what you are looking for in the movie to what you will get out of it. This is without a doubt a feast for the eyes. Whether it is the beautiful scenery or the beautiful men that you choose to gaze upon. The main problem I think many people have with this movie is that they are looking for too much in it, they are looking for the answer to happiness, or enlightenment – too much for any film to bear!

Ascher Studios was famed in the 1940s, 50s and 60s for their partnerships with artists and designers to develop fabrics and, scarves. Collaborations were done with painter Feliks Topolski, photographer Cecil Beaton and sculptor Henry Moore and in the 50s, designers such as Givenchy, Larouche and Balenciaga, lead by Christian Dior, employed Ascher silk and cotton prints for their Haute Couture collection. Mary Quant also famously used Ascher fabric for her iconic cheesecloth dresses in the seventies.

Good Enough To Eat!

I can’t count the number of times I watched Charlie And The Chocolate Factory as a kid and wished that I could go to a place where everything was made of candy with a waterfall of chocolate. As I’ve got older my tastes have matured. Oh I still want that place where I can eat everything but now I want it to be filled with art, architecture and design and tickle my taste buds with sophisticated flavours both sweet and savoury.

A chance feline encounter

Posted by Editor On September - 22 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

A recent trip to look at flats in the East End with a friend reminded me of the joy of cats. As you know I have been on a journey to find myself the perfect pooch to share my life with but after a chance meeting with a ginger and white moggy I may have reconsidered.

Keeping warm doesn’t mean you can’t look good and while the puffer jacket may be just the thing when you are skiing in the Alps, being a Belle About Town means your outerwear needs to be a little more urban. Luckily this winter it is not just about one look.

Getting to grips with whisky at Albannach

Posted by Editor On September - 20 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

I’ve never understood whisky. I leave that to fusty old men and everyone of drinking age in Scotland. It’s not that I don’t like it – my reluctance to order the so-called amber nectar has more to do with the fact I see it as a connoisseurs drink; something blended over time to be appreciated at leisure. Hardly a spirit I associate with Friday night cocktails with the girls.
